Every so often the headlines fill with volcano alerts and distant ash clouds, and makers start wondering whether that fine grey dust could settle in the shed. The honest answer is that most UK workshops will never see volcanic ash on the bench. The real point is that ash is just one more fine particulate, and the same steps that would keep it out also deal with the sawdust, sanding dust and solvent fumes you already make every weekend. Here are seven practical ways to ash-proof a UK maker space.

1. Run a room air purifier for the fine stuff

The cheapest, most passive upgrade is a box in the corner quietly cycling the air.
