Ash-Proof Your Workshop: 7 Ways to Filter the Air
Every so often the headlines fill with volcano alerts and distant ash clouds, and makers start wondering whether that fine grey dust could settle in the shed. The honest answer is that most UK workshops will never see volcanic ash on the bench. The real point is that ash is just one more fine particulate, and the same steps that would keep it out also deal with the sawdust, sanding dust and solvent fumes you already make every weekend. Here are seven practical ways to ash-proof a UK maker space.

1. Run a room air purifier for the fine stuff
The cheapest, most passive upgrade is a box in the corner quietly cycling the air. Look for a unit with a true H13 HEPA filter, which is rated to trap particles down to 0.3 microns, including the fine fraction of ash and the bulk of sanding dust. 2. Wear a proper respirator for dusty work
No room filter replaces a good seal on your face. 4. Seal your stock and consumables

The fix is boring but effective: keep filaments, glues, finishes, bearings and electronics in lidded boxes so the air cannot reach them. 5. Filter the air coming in
If you are genuinely worried about outside particulate, do not just throw windows open. A cheap, proven hack is a box fan pulling room air through a MERV-rated furnace filter taped to the intake. It is not a sealed HEPA unit, but it strips the coarse fraction out of incoming air for the price of a fan and a filter. Run it while you work and you get a gentle positive pressure that pushes dust out rather than letting it drift in. 6. Cover machines when they are idle
A solid workbench and a few dust sheets go a long way. When you finish for the day, throw a breathable cover over the lathe, the 3D printer and the power tools so the next week's dust does not bake onto them. 7. Build a clean corner for sensitive kit
If you print, solder or store camera gear, give it a clean zone away from the dusty end of the shop.
