How to Fix a Power Tool Battery Not Charging

Your drill clicks, the charger blinks, and the battery sits there doing nothing. If your power tool battery is not charging, do not bin it just yet. Most 18V lithium packs in the UK fail for boring, fixable reasons - dirty contacts, a sleeping BMS, or a tired charger - and a ten-minute check can save you ยฃ40 to ยฃ70 on a replacement.

Quick answer if you are in a hurry: Unplug the charger for 2 minutes, clean the metal contacts on both battery and charger with a dry cotton bud, check the wall socket with another device, slide the pack in firmly, and leave it for 15 minutes. If the charger still flashes red or does nothing, try a second battery in the same charger and the same battery in a different charger. That tells you whether the charger, battery, or tool is at fault.

1. Work safe first

Lithium packs store a lot of energy. Do not open the case, puncture, or short the terminals with a screwdriver or foil. If the pack is swollen, hot, smells sweet or chemical, or has cracked housing, stop. Place it on a non-flammable surface outside the workshop and contact your local council's WEEE collection point. For every other case where the pack just will not charge, the steps below are low-risk and tool-free.

Keep spare batteries away from direct sun and radiators while you troubleshoot. A hot pack straight off a job will refuse to charge by design. Let it cool to room temperature - most UK chargers block charging above about 45 degrees.

2. Check the boring stuff: mains, lead, and indicator lights

Start at the wall. UK chargers die quietly more often than batteries do. You will know quickly with a simple swap test.

3. Clean the contacts - the fix that works most often

Dust, plaster, and cutting oil build up on the spring terminals inside the pack and the charger. The pack reports a voltage error and the charger refuses to start. You do not need contact spray to fix this.

  1. Unplug the charger from the wall.
  2. Remove the pack and look at the flat metal terminals. Brush off loose dust with a dry, soft toothbrush or cotton bud.
  3. If the terminals look dull or slightly green, gently rub with a dry cotton bud. Do not use wet cleaners, wire wool, or WD-40. A pencil eraser dabbed dry can lift light oxidation - brush away any rubber crumbs after.
  4. Blow out the charger bay with a quick puff of air. Do not use a workshop air line at close range - the pressure can bend the contacts.
  5. Re-seat the pack firmly and try again.

4. Waking a deeply discharged pack

Leaving a lithium pack flat for months is the fastest way to trigger its Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS disconnects the cells when voltage drops too low to protect them. The charger then sees 0V and assumes no pack is present, so it never starts.

How to wake it safely without opening the case:

If the pack wakes, it may show only one bar initially. Run it lightly in a drill on low speed, then charge fully. Avoid running it completely flat - lithium packs prefer shallow cycles. 5. When the charger is the culprit

UK 18V chargers fail in three predictable ways: the DC jack fractures where the lead enters, the fan clogs with workshop dust and overheats, or the internal fuse blows after a surge. Signs of a charger fault are consistent - no packs charge, the indicator stays dark, or it clicks off after a few seconds with any pack.
